Crib Buying Guide: How To Choose a Crib For The Nursery

Designing nurseries is fun and exciting. Not only do you create a pleasant oasis to encourage your new members to grow and learn, you also provide them with a comfortable place that nurtures a sense of security. Keep this in mind, choosing the right crib is one of the most important decisions you make before your baby is born-after all, this is their life for about two years in the future. There are so many factors to consider, and you may wonder where to start.

The basics of the crib

Don't know where to start? Let's start with the basics.

What is a crib?

Baby Crib

The baby crib is a bed specially designed for babies and very small children. Traditionally, it is like a bed specially prepared for older children and adults, with a slatted railing on all four sides to keep the baby in place.

How long does the crib last?

On average, the crib is used 24 months after birth. Having said that, the transition from a child to a toddler or double bed varies greatly. A sure way to make sure your child is ready to continue living is to climb out when they are obviously too big to fit in the crib, with minimal effort.

When should I buy a crib?

The crib is usually purchased during the mother's pregnancy. If they are interested in a certain design or color scheme, some people may wait until the third trimester, when they know their gender. Parents are often encouraged to plan ahead to allow time for furniture delivery.

Safety guidelines

Safety precautions that parents should take are as follows.

Side bars: The distance between the side rails of the crib should not exceed 2-3/8" (or about the width of a soda can). Why? This spacing helps prevent the baby from slipping out or getting stuck. For the same reason, cribs with cut-outs on the headboard and footboard should also be avoided.

Corner post: The height of the corner post should not exceed 1/16 inch. Anything taller can hold your child's clothes.

Bare is best: there should be no toys, stuffed animals, pillows or blankets in the crib with the child. The only bedding they need is waterproof cushions and suitable bed sheets. If the bedding is machine washable, most parents find it easier to wash the clothes, and they must use a mild, odorless detergent to avoid disturbing the baby’s skin. If your baby looks cold, use swaddle blanket to warm them up.

Dust nest: Babies are very sensitive to dust and dander. Therefore, the bottom of the crib should be vacuumed frequently, especially if you use a crib skirt. As an extra measure, keep pets away from the crib to prevent the spread of marks and fur.

Cords and strings: Keep the crib away from windows, curtains, ropes and other things your child can pull. Mattress: The mattress of the crib should be comfortable, reaching every corner of the crib frame. If there are more than two fingers between the crib and the mattress, the mattress is too small.
