How to Safely Use Baby Swings?

Nov. 23, 2020

Baby Swings can be a valuable asset when parents need help comforting children or providing a safe place for their children while busy with household chores.

Baby swings and Baby Bouncers are separate, elevated seats that allow the baby to sit at a semi-inclined angle. They are basically baby seats, making it easier for adults and siblings to interact with babies. They can also have a calming effect, soothe agitated babies and even put them to sleep. However, they can be dangerous if used inappropriately - and unsafe usage is common.

Dangerous Things

It all starts with angles. Many baby swings position the baby between 30 and 45 degrees from the vertical, which is not good for the newborn. The smaller babies are, the less muscle tone they have at rest, which means they're at greater risk of their heads leaning forward and blocking airways (which is why you're sleeping with your baby flat on your back).

Belts can also cause problems. Entanglement is a serious threat to pediatricians. Sleeping on a rocking bed or swing is not as safe as sleeping on a firm, properly cushioned mattress with minimal bedding.

How to Use Baby Swings Safely?

Always use a swing or a cradle to supervise the baby, but do not carry it with you. The swing belongs to the floor.

Keep the belt tight, but make sure it doesn't bind the baby's airways. Consider best practices for car seats.

Don't exceed the weight limit. If a baby can sit alone, a rocking chair or swing will no longer be safe.

Always monitor the baby.

Babies under 4 months old should sit on the most tilted swing to avoid tipping over and choking.

Swings should not be overturned or easily folded.

If the seat can be adjusted to an angle greater than 50 degrees, the seat should have shoulder straps to prevent the baby from falling.

The toys on the mobile phone on the swing should not be pulled down easily.

Caregivers should ensure that the infant's weight does not exceed the weight limit specified in the swing label or instructions.

The cradle surface of a swing should be kept fairly flat when moving and stopping, so that the baby does not tip over or fall.

Baby Swing

Therefore, the risk of a baby swing can be minimized if the baby's head is thrown too far ahead and the belt is tight and there is no risk of the baby breathing, as long as an adult can monitor and intervene. However, it is not a good choice for feeding.

Falls caused by swaying are an important cause of emergency room visits for infants, whether a child squirming on its own or walking from a parent, or parents and caregivers falling as they move out of the water. If the baby has developed the ability to sit up alone or exceed the maximum weight limit, it's time to stop using the device. Parents should only use swings or rocking chairs on the floor - do not use swings or rocking chairs on counters, sofas or tables, and do not carry your baby's rocking chair or swing with you.

Despite the risks and necessary precautions, swings do have benefits as long as the baby is monitored. They can be fun and soothing. A baby on a supervised swing or rocking chair might be better than sleeping on the couch with dad. There's no reason to be afraid of rocking or jumping, but work hard.
